The City of Hamilton is undertaking the Lower Chedoke Creek Master Plan and Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate various water quality improvement alternatives as they relate to the ecology of the area, including Cootes Paradise and the western Hamilton Harbour.
Background
In July 2018, the City of Hamilton informed the public that it had discovered that one of its combined sewer overflow tanks in the City was discharging combined sewage into Chedoke Creek. The City immediately stopped the discharge, began clean-up activities in the area, and contacted the Provincial Spills Action Centre.
Since then, the City has been working closely with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) to investigate the incident, respond to Provincial Orders related to the spill, and plan for remediation efforts in the Chedoke Creek Watershed and Cootes Paradise.
The City is working with the MECP and various stakeholders on remediation activities in the Chedoke Creek Watershed, including targeted dredging activities in Lower Chedoke Creek and proposed remediation measures for the Lower Chedoke Creek and Cootes Paradise.
