50-year HSR Operator Maurice Powell Marks Milestone Service with Mohawk College legacy and Arkells Tribute
HAMILTON, ON – Earlier today, representatives from Mohawk College and Trapeze Group North America joined City of Hamilton staff at the HSR’s Mountain Transit Centre to congratulate Maurice Powell on his 50th Anniversary as an Operator with the HSR. This achievement makes him the first transit operator, and only second employee in the history of the City of Hamilton, to reach the 50 year service milestone.
“On behalf of the entire staff and management team, thank your Maurice for your steadfast dedication, commitment and love of your job. We are truly grateful you have chosen to spend your career with us at the HSR.” Said Director of Transit, Debbie Dalle Vedove. “I see our community partnerships as an important catalyst for the future of our transit system.” - Debbie Dalle Vedove, Director of Transit, Hamilton Street Railway
We were thrilled to announce the Maurice Powell Bursary made possible by our partner Trapeze Group North America, in a five-year partnership with Mohawk College. A bursary of $500 per year will be awarded to a student enrolling in the Civil Engineering Technology – Transportation Program. Supporting education and creating new partnerships highlights cornerstones of the vision and mission held by HSR.
Mohawk College and the Mohawk College Foundation are pillars in our community, and Mr. Powell's bursary serves as another result of industry, academia and government coming together to invest in future resources. HSR is forging new opportunities for transportation related skillsets as a catalyst for improved service.
Special thanks to Max Kerman and the Arkells for graciously honouring our ‘peoples champ’ as Mr. Powell has said he will wear his touring jacket with pride! You can watch their greeting here.
