Action plan regarding odours at Biosolids Management Facility submitted to the MECP
HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton is continuing to work collaboratively to address odours at the Biosolids Management Facility at the Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant. Earlier today, the City – along with the operator of the Biosolids facility, Synagro – submitted an action plan to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks outlining plans to address odours at the facility.
The action plan, which was created by Synagro, includes a gap analysis and outlines several areas for improvement, including:
- Updates to their Odour Management Plan and complaint investigation process
- Modifications to current processes around truck loading/material handling to minimize odours
- Improved maintenance of critical equipment
- Evaluation of ventilation system
- Various housekeeping improvements
All actions are planned to be completed prior to the end of 2021.
In addition to Synagro’s commitments, the City will be conducting a third-party property-wide odour assessment in early 2022 to ensure the remedial actions taken by Synagro have resolved odour impacts for surrounding neighbours. This assessment will help the City to assure residents that the odour issues have been addressed appropriately.
The City takes the issue of air quality and the concerns of areas residents very seriously and will take all appropriate steps to address this issue.
