Afternoon Fire Severely Damages Three Homes
HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at the rear of a house located at 34 Grant Avenue, Hamilton at approximately 4:49 pm this afternoon. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed heavy fire and smoke at the rear of 34 Grant Ave with flames impinging on neighboring homes.
Due to the age, construction and close proximity of neighbouring houses, the fire quickly spread to homes on either side of 34 Grant Avenue. Firefighters initiated search and rescue procedures and an aggressive interior attack but were then forced out of 34 Grant Ave. due to the structural integrity and volume of fire. At that point the crews adopted an exterior attack of the fire and upgraded the fire to a multiple alarm to bring additional resources on scene, including two aerial ladder trucks. Despite their efforts the fire extended to adjacent addresses at 32 and 36 Grant Ave before crews were able to stop the spread of fire. Damage to the homes is expected to be extensive with over $1 million in dollar loss and an Investigator from the Office of the Fire Marshal will investigate to assist in determining a cause.
Fire Crews are expected to remain on scene dealing with spot fires for an extended period this evening and there have been no reported injuries. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist occupants of the homes with alternate living arrangements.
