Be a Flu Fighter: Flu activity increasing in Hamilton
HAMILTON, ON - City of Hamilton Public Health Services advises residents that Hamilton is seeing increased flu activity, signalling the start of the local flu season.
The flu is a serious illness that affects the breathing system. It starts suddenly and often lasts longer than a cold. Symptoms include: fever, headache, body aches, chills, tiredness, weakness, cough, runny eyes, stuffy nose and sore throat. Certain groups, such as young children and those over 65 years of age are at higher risk for developing complications from the flu and should make sure to get the flu vaccine every year.
While overall flu activity in Hamilton is still low, it is increasing which means it is still a good time to get the flu shot. Getting the flu shot also protects people around you, such as young children and seniors, who are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from flu.

Prevent the spread of the flu
The flu shot is the best defence against the flu for you, your family, and those around you from getting sick with the flu. In addition to getting the flu shot, it’s important to take everyday precautions like washing hands often with soap and warm water, and covering coughs and sneezes. The flu virus can live on surfaces for up to eight hours so it is also important to clean shared objects and surfaces like doorknobs, light switches or keys often. It is also important that people stay home when they are sick to get better, but also prevent the spread of the flu in the community or at work.
