Changes to Green Bin Program begin Monday: Grass clippings and other yard waste no longer accepted
HAMILTON, ON – Beginning Monday, leaf and yard waste – including grass clippings – will no longer be accepted in the City’s green bins. This change will help avoid the introduction of ammonia, a potential contributor to poor air quality, at the Central Composting Facility (CCF).
Residents should place all leaf and yard waste, including grass clippings, in a brown paper yard waste bag or an open top rigid reusable container marked with a free yard waste sticker for weekly collection. Reusable containers may include bins or garbage cans without a lid. City issued green bins or blue boxes are not acceptable containers for yard waste.
The City encourages all residents to participate in both the Green Bin and Leaf and Yard Waste programs. New recycling and waste calendars and yard waste stickers were recently distributed to all residential properties in Hamilton.
The City would like to remind residents:
- Yard waste stickers cannot be placed on green bins or blue boxes.
- Green bins should only be used for food scraps and soiled paper products like napkins and pizza boxes.
