City continuing short term repairs and assessing long term solutions after freeze-thaw cycles damage roads
Hamilton, ON – As modern winters are trending toward a higher frequency of freeze-thaw cycles with more extremes, many older roads in the City of Hamilton have sustained significant pavement damage and potholes.
In order to mitigate the impacts, Roads crews in Hamilton continue to respond with “all hands on deck” in an effort to repair damage to the road in several priority areas across the city. Public Works is also leveraging private contractors in addition to its own crews to patch roads. Cold patch, recycled hot mix, and a new specialty product Instarmac (Instant Road Repair for heavy traffic areas) are materials being utilized as conditions dictate.
In the coming weeks Public Works staff will be conducting a thorough assessment and will bring forward a report proposing more comprehensive, long lasting repairs to locations that have experienced extreme deterioration this winter. This assessment will identify a priority list of areas and options for Council’s consideration.
Prioritization will be based on the following evidence and criteria: current road condition, road classification (arterial, collector, residential), traffic volumes, bus routes, truck routes, future planned work, risk management, master plan/development projects, and input from roads and maintenance program.
Residents and motorists are asked to report potholes by contacting the City’s Customer Service Contact Centre during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at 905-546-CITY (2489). When reporting potholes, residents are asked to provide detailed information such as location (street addresses or intersections) and estimated size of the pothole.
I want to thank everyone for your patience as we work to make these necessary repairs.
