City of Hamilton continues to clean up after winter storm
HAMILTON, ON – City of Hamilton crews are continuing to respond and clean up after the winter weather in recent days. Severe conditions caused damage in several areas of the city, and staff are working hard to make repairs at this time.
As of this afternoon, winter roads crews are still working to clear ice and snow from residential streets, city-owned sidewalks, school sidewalks and bus stops.
Current closures and impacts from the severe weather include:
- The southbound off ramp at King Street on the Red Hill Valley Parkway remains closed due to erosion concerns
- Localized flooding and ponding on roadways in several areas throughout the city. Motorists should be cautious of water over the road.
- Some properties near Lake Ontario at Beach Road are experiencing flooding. The City is responding to these neighbourhoods to help reduce basement flooding impacts.
- The Chedoke Radial Trail remains closed between Chedoke Golf Course and the Scenic drive entrance due to erosion and debris over the trail
- The Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently in by-pass mode due to very high water flows. Several combined sewer overflow tanks are also overflowing.
- The Waterfront Trail between the Lift Bridge and Confederation Park has also sustained damage, and the City is working with the Hamilton Conservation Authority to clear debris and make it safe for users. Residents are asked to stay clear of the area.
- The Waterfront Trail between Bayfront Park and the Desjardins Canal sustained some damage from wave action. This area is currently open but does still require repair from damage caused due to high lake levels and flooding during the spring of 2017.
- The breakwater structure at the west harbour marina also sustained some damage, and as a result some of the docks in area require repairs.
Residents are reminded to be cautious around all bodies of water, and be aware of possible hazards caused by rain and winds.
Given there is still some rain in the forecast, residents can follow the following tips to avoiding flooding on or around their properties:
- Keep catch basins in front of your home clear of snow and ice and other debris.
- If your home has a backwater valve installed, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning to ensure that it is functioning properly.
- Check your sump pump to make sure it is working properly.
- If your home or area is prone to flooding you may want to consider ensuring any valuables are up off of basement floors.
Residents can call 905-546-2489 to report sewer back-ups, flooding over roadways, fallen trees and branches on public property or debris in drainage ditches or culverts.
My sincere thanks to all City of Hamilton staff who weathered dangerous conditions and worked tirelessly this weekend. As they continue to clear snow and ice from all priority and residential roads, City-owned sidewalks, bus stops and school sidewalks, please give them the space they need to operate. - Mayor Fred Eisenberger
