City of Hamilton partnering with Microsoft on Vision Zero Video Analytics project

HAMILTON, ON - June 7, 2017 – The City of Hamilton has partnered with Microsoft and other municipalities in North America on a Video Analytics project that will ultimately help to identify and distinguish near miss collisions that occur at intersections in Hamilton.

Vision Zero is a global movement transforming the way we use, interact and travel on our roads. It has a simple and clear goal: zero fatalities or serious injuries on roadways. Vision Zero aims for safer streets through improved education, enforcement, engineering, evaluation and engagement.

Under the leadership of researchers at Microsoft, the City of Hamilton and other municipalities in North America are asking residents to consider participating in the Video Analytics project by helping to “teach” computers how to recognize vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Ultimately, the goal will be to build a computer program that will identify these road users on its own, which in turn will help to detect road conflicts and aid traffic engineers in taking preventative action to avoid collisions.
