City of Hamilton’s First Citizen Survey Results Released
HAMILTON, ON – Today, the City of Hamilton released the results of the first-ever citizen survey, conducted via telephone and online in early 2018 to help the City better understand the needs and perceptions of Hamiltonians with respect to the range of municipal services offered across the community; value for tax dollars; as well as quality of life and wellbeing.
Overall, 66 per cent of respondents indicated they were either satisfied or very satisfied with City of Hamilton services. Further results reveal:
- Highest Rated Services: Emergency Services (Fire and Paramedics), Libraries, Parks/Open Space and Recreation Facilities.
- Lowest Rated Services: Roads and Sidewalks, HSR, Snow Plowing/Salting and By-Law Enforcement.
- The majority (83 per cent) of the phone survey respondents who had contacted the City of Hamilton in the past year felt that their overall experience contacting the City of Hamilton was positive.
- The majority of respondents from the phone survey agreed or strongly agreed that Hamilton is a great place to live, work, play and learn.
Knowing what residents think of us matters. People have every right to expect high quality municipal services for their tax dollars. As outgoing City Manager for this City, I am leaving very encouraged to know that residents believe we are doing many things well. I want to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our staff who deliver those services. At the same time, the survey highlighted areas where we know we can do better. To that end, I am pleased to say that there is already improvement work underway. - Chris Murray, City Manager
Quick Facts
- The telephone version of the survey called approximately 20,284 randomly selected Hamilton-based phone numbers across all wards and collected 550 completed responses, representing a statistically representative sample of the Hamilton population.
- An online survey supplemented the telephone interviews; however, results from the two data sources should not be compared due to the self-selection bias of the online survey. The results from the online survey were not determined to be a statistically representative sample of the population.
- The baseline findings from the Our Citizen Survey 2018 will be incorporated into the Citizen Dashboard and updated as future iterations of the survey are conducted.
