City honours Hamilton’s seniors at 24th annual gala event
HAMILTON, ON - Tonight, Hamilton’s seniors were recognized for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the community at the City of Hamilton’s 24th annual Senior of the Year Awards at Michelangelo’s Events and Conference Centre.
As part of ongoing celebrations in June as Seniors Month, this annual awards program celebrates seniors age 65 and older who contribute their time and talents in service to others or the community.

It is important that we recognize and celebrate the special role volunteers play in making a difference in the lives of residents and our community. - The Senior of the Year Awards includes 10 award categories including a Youth Supporting Senior Award. In total, there were 36 nominees, including 32 seniors age 65 and over and four youth age 15-24.
- The event brought together more than 400 attendees, including Honourable Filomena Tassi, MP Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas and Minister of Seniors; and Honourable Raymond Sung Joon Cho, MPP Scarborough North, and Minister for Seniors and Accessibility.
- The event featured a video highlighting the Intergenerational Mural Project, which brought together students and senior volunteers to inspire volunteerism in the community in support of Hamilton’s Age Friendly Plan. This project was a partnership between the City of Hamilton, St. Michael Catholic Elementary School and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
- The Age Friendly Hamilton 2014-2019 Community Progress Report outlines the achievements of key objectives made as of March 2019, with 47 actions completed, 44 in the planning or implementation stages, and 10 pending completion or reassessment.
- Hamilton’s award-winning Age Friendly Plan aligns with the City’s 10-year Strategic Plan, with two priorities especially – Healthy & Safe Communities and Community Engagement & Participation.
