City invites residents to “Come Together to End Homelessness”

HAMILTON, ON - On Monday, April 29, 2019, the media and public are invited to participate in a community engagement event to discuss homelessness in Hamilton. Hosted by the City of Hamilton’s Housing Division, the “Coming Together to End Homelessness” event will provide the opportunity for the public and community agencies to discuss and provide comment on how Hamilton will be ending chronic homelessness as part of a document called “Coming Together to End Homelessness - A System Planning Framework.” This framework, which is an extension of the Housing and Homelessness Action Plan, will provide context to how Hamilton will work towards ending homelessness through building an effective and outcome-oriented homelessness serving system.

• With the release of the new Federal Directives called “Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy” there is a shift for communities to establish a coordinated access system to ensure that homelessness is prevented, whenever possible, and that the experience of homelessness is otherwise a rare, brief and non-reoccurring. In addition to this shift, there is the requirement for communities to be outcomes focused and to track progress towards ending homelessness in their respective areas.
• The City of Hamilton is in support of this shift while understanding that homelessness is a complex, but solvable problem.
• In Hamilton we will be moving away from simply managing homelessness to ending it by 2025 using a Housing First approach.
