Commemorate and Celebrate the end of the First World War at the Hamilton Military Museum
HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Military Museum, part of Dundurn National Historic Site at 610 York Blvd., is commemorating the end of the First World War and the celebrations that were held to mark its conclusion, with three unique events on November 9, 10 and 17.
Cheers to Victory
“Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag” and join the celebration as we commemorate the end of the Great War with Cheers to Victory on Friday November 9 from 6 pm to 10 pm. This immersive musical presentation, featuring Ian Bell and local performers, will take you on a journey from the home front to the trenches. Then, sing-along to the musical movie “Oh, What a Lovely War!” while enjoying delicious craft beer available for purchase from Hamilton’s own Merit Brewing Company. Participation is by donation. Open to all ages - 19+ for beer consumption; identification required.
Peace at Last: A Centennial Celebration
This celebration is a FREE afternoon of family-friendly entertainment and hands-on activities on Saturday November 10 from 12 pm to 4 pm. Stop by The Coach House at Dundurn and snap a photo with the horses from Canadian Great War Society’s Hamilton Volunteer Cavalry Squad. Enjoy live musical entertainment, themed crafts, dress-up stations, and interactive displays presented by Vintage Signals Team and Fieldcote Museum. Don’t forget to stop at the Museum’s exhibit: Our Hamilton: Through their Eyes, and hang a poppy in remembrance.
Crack the Code
Do you have what it takes to be a codebreaker? The public are invited to learn about the extraordinary world of military secrecy at the Crack the Code workshop on Saturday November 17 from 10 am to 12 noon. In partnership with the expert codebreakers from the Vintage Signals Team, participants will assist in the assembly of a working telegraph and experience the thrill of sending, receiving, and decoding messages using these devices while they race against your friends! Participants will take home a complimentary bag containing an Alberti cipher wheel, a Morse code translator, and much more! This hands-on workshop is $35.00 per person and pre-registration is required. Tickets are available online at www.hamilton.ca/militarymuseum.
