Contaminated water in Chedoke Creek: Public advised to keep out of the water
HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton is investigating the cause of highly contaminated water in the area of Chedoke Creek and Cootes Paradise. Due to the contamination, the public is advised to keep out of the water at this time.
The City is currently taking steps to investigate the source of the contamination, including:
- Visual inspections of sewer and other underground infrastructure in the area
- Investigations upstream of Chedoke Creek to look for potential sources of contamination
- Inspection of the sanitary sewer and surface conditions within the Ministry of Transportation project area near Highway 403 and Cootes Paradise
- Planning for removal of surface material in Chedoke Creek
At this time, the cause of the contamination is unknown.
The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) has removed the docks at Cootes Paradise and warning signs are being installed at public access points along the shore of the affected area of Cootes Paradise (Princess Point) and Chedoke Creek to notify the public of the poor water quality. At this time, the remainder of Cootes Paradise is not suspected to be affected.
At this time Public Health Services is warning the public to stay out of and not touch the water in Chedoke Creek and Princess Point. If you come into contact with the water, wash yourself off promptly with warm water and soap.
