Evening Fire Sends One Person to Hospital
HAMILTON, ON – October 25, 2016 – Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 47 Fielding Cr Hamilton at approximately 9:10 pm yesterday evening. Upon arrival firefighters found the occupant outside of the house and confirmed a well involved fire with heavy smoke showing from the basement of this residential three level multi-unit structure.
Due to a language barrier with the occupant it was unknown if additional occupants were in the building and with the large amount of smoke throughout the building a multiple alarm was initiated to bring additional crews to the location to assist in firefighting operations.
Crews entering the home found a well involved fire in the basement unit and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after an aggressive interior attack with no fire spread to the upper floors. Search and rescue operations of the entire house found no other occupants.
While the fire was contained to the ground floor unit, there was smoke damage throughout and damage is estimated at approximately $25,000. The lone occupant was treated on scene by paramedics for his injuries and transported to hospital. There were no other reported injuries to the public or firefighters.
The cause of the fire was the occupant attempting to start a fire in his fireplace igniting other combustibles in the room. The Hamilton Fire Department would like to remind the public to exercise caution when operating their heating appliances with preventative care and keeping combustible items at a safe distance can reduce the likelihood of an unintended incident.
