Fire forces tenants to evacuate building
HAMILTON, ON – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of fire in a 7 storey high-rise apartment building located at 101 Governor’s Road, Dundas at approximately 7:40 pm last night.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a working fire in an apartment on 7th floor of the building with heavy black smoke throughout the 7th floor. A multiple alarm was then initiated to bring additional fire crews to the scene to assist in suppression operations.
Firefighters immediately initiated a search of the apartment and an aggressive fire attack. Firefighters were able to successfully knock the fire down thereby limiting fire damage to the one apartment unit.
The fire apartment was heavily damaged and the remaining 29 apartments on the seventh floor also sustained smoke damage. None of the occupants of the seventh floor are being allowed back in their apartments tonight due to the significant smoke damage. Red Cross was called in to assist with finding alternate accommodations for eleven people from six apartments that did not have accommodation.
The two occupants who had been in the apartment were able to evacuate themselves. One of the occupants was treated for smoke inhalation by Hamilton Paramedics and transported to hospital.
Damage is estimated at approximately $300,000 and the suspected cause of the fire was a candle coming in contact with combustible drapery.
The Hamilton Fire Department would like to remind citizens to extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing. Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
