Firefighters Respond to Fire at St. Peter's Hospital
HAMILTON, ON – November 5, 2017 – The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire this morning at 9:15 am at 88 Maplewood Ave, (St Peter’s Hospital). Upon arrival firefighters observed heavy smoke and fire conditions with flames showing from the third floor, south wing storage facility.
Firefighters entered the building to perform an aggressive interior attack and were able to extinguish the fire and prevent the spread of fire into the occupied portions of the building. Simultaneous to our fire operations, Hamilton Police Service and Hamilton Paramedic Service were supporting the evacuation of occupants to safety as smoke had entered the care areas of the hospital.
The Hamilton Paramedic Service invoked its plans for multiple patient transport with the support of the Toronto Paramedic Service providing a large medical transport bus. It was through a combined effort of all first responders and on site hospital staff at this call that ensured occupants were safely relocated and cared for during the fire operations.
The fire was contained to the South Wing of the building which did not have any occupants and is primarily used for storage. Damage is extensive and is estimated to be a multi-million dollar loss. The occupants of the building are all safely accounted for and there were no injuries related to the fire.
The Ontario Fire Marshal is now on scene conducting an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire in the south wing. Patient care is now the responsibility of Hamilton Health Sciences Staff.
