GTHA Mayors and Chairs committed to cooperation during COVID-19 resurgence
HAMILTON, ON - Once again today Mayors and Chairs from the 11 largest municipal governments across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area met to discuss their concern around the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mayors and Chairs reiterated their commitment to continue to cooperate and communicate with each other on the fight against COVID-19 and in preparing for the anticipated resurgence.
In that regard, all present expressed their concern about the recent rising case counts within the region and across Ontario, and committed to continuing to work with other governments to minimize virus spread.
The Mayors and Chairs also expressed the continuing belief that following consistent public health advice with respect to physical distancing, face coverings and handwashing represented the best tools in the fight against COVID-19.
They also agreed that personal responsibility is more important than ever and that just saying 'no' to large parties, crowd scenes and close encounters and saying 'yes' to the wearing of masks will help us win this fight.
To that end, the Mayors and Chairs will seek out early opportunities to mount a joint public education campaign to remind our millions of residents about public health advice and personal responsibility.
We will also look forward to working with the other governments on the fight against COVID-19 including ensuring returning travellers understand the serious consequences of not following quarantine rules and ensuring a robust and strategic testing regime.
“As the City of Hamilton continues to adaptively respond to COVID-19, it is essential that we all remain vigilant in our personal and collective efforts to contain the spread of the virus. Looking ahead to the coming fall and winter months, we urge all members of our communities to continue to adhere to the health and safety recommendations from public health experts, which include the wearing of face coverings when in enclosed public spaces, practicing physical distancing, frequent handwashing and staying true to your social bubble. It is only through our collective commitment to practicing all the necessary COVID-19 safety measures that we can effectively combat any potential resurgence of cases within our communities.”
