Hamilton Fire Chief presents 2017 accomplishments to Healthy & Safe Communities Committee
HAMILTON, ON – On Monday, March 26, 2018, the Hamilton Fire Department presented its 2017 annual report to the Healthy and Safe Communities Committee.
Described through performance data, success stories and photographs, Hamilton Fire Chief, David Cunliffe presented the accomplishments from 2017. Chief Cunliffe also described how the fire service pursues continuous improvement opportunities through the use of service data and efficiency models to optimize resources to increase their ability to deliver the level of service that the City requires.
As part of the presentation, the Hamilton Fire Department launched a new video to introduce residents to the women and men of Hamilton’s fire service and the wide range of preventative and response services they deliver to Hamilton’s residents every day.
Quick Facts
- Hamilton Fire Department responded to 31,615 incidents in 2017, averaging 87 incidents per day, this is an increase of 4.8% compared to 2016
- There were 272 structure fires in 2017, down 7.3% from 2016 levels. Of the total structure fires, 200 of these were in homes.
- In the homes in which a fire occurred, 54.4% of the homes had working smoke alarms installed in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code. This is an increase of 6.4% over 2016.
- In 2017, there were 6 fire fatalities. This was a 45% decrease compared to 2016, during which there were 11 fatalities.
- Through the Home Fire Safety Education Program, 11,713 homes were visited, 1,351 smoke alarms were installed, 273 batteries were changed.
- The top two causes of residential building fires in 2017 were unattended cooking and careless smoking.
