Hamilton residents advised of City Hall drop-box theft
HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton is advising residents and businesses that property was vandalized and stolen at City Hall this week.
The vandalism and theft occurred at the first floor drop box at the rear entrance of City Hall on the morning of Sunday, October 22.
Upon discovering the theft, staff contacted the Hamilton Police Service, took measures to secure the drop box and review security processes to better secure mail.
Upon completion of the security review on October 25, review findings were passed on to the City’s privacy office who informed the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario this morning.
The City anticipates this incident may only impact a small number of individuals. Out of an abundance of caution, the City is issuing a public statement to advise anyone who may have used the drop-box between 4:30 pm on October 20 and 6 am on October 22 to contact the City’s Corporate Privacy Specialist at 905-546-2424 ext.6370.
The drop-box is available for residents to deposit correspondence or City service information outside of City Hall business hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Access to the drop-box will be temporarily unavailable pending a review of the use of drop boxes and security measures.
The City of Hamilton takes the responsibility of protecting the security of individuals and their personal information very seriously and has already started to review security processes to ensure the protection of personal information.
