New Gage Avenue bicycle lanes opening soon
HAMILTON, ON – Later today, the City of Hamilton will begin construction on the new Gage Avenue bicycle lanes. The new cycling facility is located between Lawrence Road and Industrial Drive/ Burlington Street, and they will provide a more efficient and convenient north-south cycling route network in the city.
The installation will include the removal of existing pavement markings beginning on Monday night, and temporary pylons will be set out to restrict parking to make room for these roadworks. After these removals are completed, the new pavement markings will be applied.
On-street parking will be consolidated to one side of the street along various segments as part of the completed project.
Some segments along the Gage Avenue bicycle lanes will have painted buffers and the commonly used green bicycle boxes will help cyclists turn between the new Gage Avenue bicycle lanes and the existing Cannon Street bicycle lanes.
The newly installed bicycle lanes will connect Gage Park and the Lawrence Road bicycle lanes in the south with the Burlington Street multi-use path and the industrial lands in the north. The new lanes are a welcomed addition to the City’s existing cycling route network in the area, which includes the Cannon Street bicycle lanes, the Pipeline Trail, the multi-use trail network in Gage Park, bicycle lanes on Lawrence Road, the new bicycle lanes on Maplewood Avenue and Delaware Avenue, and the multi-use path on Burlington Street.
The Gage Avenue bicycle lanes are part of the 2018 Cycling Master Plan, recently approved by Council as part of the City’s Transportation Master Plan.
The new bike lanes are anticipated to be completely operational on November 2, weather permitting.
