Occupants Safely Escape Apartment Fire
HAMILTON, ON – November 13, 2016 – Fire crews responded at 2:27 am to a three storey, residential apartment building located at 123 Emerald Street South for a reported fire in a unit on the third floor. Upon arrival firefighters found the unit to be well involved with a kitchen fire which had extended throughout the apartment with heavy smoke showing from the windows.
Firefighters worked quickly and were able to effect a successful knockdown and extinguishment of the fire in the third floor unit with no fire spread to other apartment units.
Damage to the apartment unit is estimated at $35,000 in total. There were no injuries reported to the public or firefighters, unfortunately a family pet cat did perish in the fire. The cause of the fire has been determined to be unattended cooking.
