Pier 8 Promenade Park approved for spring 2018 opening
HAMILTON, ON - April 5, 2017 - The City of Hamilton today announced the creation of a promenade park on Pier 8 where visitors will enjoy access to the water’s edge, along with a variety of activities and amenities. The promenade park, approved by Council as part of the Pier 7 + 8 Urban Design Study, will be approximately 30 metres wide along the north and east edges of Pier 8 and will be constructed starting in the spring of 2018.
Community input & vision for waterfront will be integral to winning design
In order to create a vibrant destination that reflects the community’s vision for the waterfront, the City of Hamilton will host a limited design competition. Prominent designers and landscape architects will compete in a two-step process to have their interpretation of the community’s vision selected as the final design for the park.
An external jury with expertise in urban design, landscape architecture, architecture and arts, culture and heritage will choose the winning design.
Quick facts
- The last major design competition, held in Hamilton in 1928, resulted in the High Level Bridge and Rock Garden
- Members of the public are invited to review the proposed vision, objectives and park elements for Pier 8 Promenade Park at a public meeting on Thursday, April 20. Register your attendance online
- Design competition costs, including design team stipends and jury costs, will be covered through an $185,000 donation from the Patrick J. McNally Charitable Foundation

Pre-Qualification Process
Design teams will be selected through a prequalification process from April 4 to 27, 2017. Project documents are available at www.biddingo.com/Hamilton.
Up to six design teams will then proceed to the Request for Proposal (RFP) stage from May 8 to July 20, 2017. The six designs submitted will be presented to the public at the end of July and the public will be invited to submit their opinions on the six designs through in-person and online surveys.
The external jury will review each design and select the winning design based on:
- design excellence
- innovation
- response to the overall vision and goals for the park
- community opinions
The winning design team will be announced in September 2017.
“We hope that this competition process will result in a range of bold, innovative and highly creative design proposals for a new, high-quality public space on Hamilton’s waterfront. We are excited to see how some of the most talented landscape architects, designers and culture and heritage professionals from across the country and beyond interpret the community's vision for this space and turn it into an implementable design.” Jason Thorne, General Manager, Planning and Economic Development
