Recycle Coach & My Waste users impacted by data breach
HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton is notifying approximately 1,100 residents who are subscribers of Recycle Coach & My Waste of a data breach where email addresses were accessed without authorization.
Municipal Media Inc. – the service provider for Recycle Coach & My Waste – notified the City of Hamilton and several other municipalities using these services about the data breach earlier this week. In order to ensure all impacted residents are properly notified, the City has also reached out to the 1,100 affected users.
Email addresses were provided by residents who registered to be notified of garbage, recycling and yard-waste collection schedules and related information.
At this time, it appears that only email address were accessed by the unauthorized party. No other information such as name, location or passwords were impacted.
The City of Hamilton is advising residents to:
- Be wary of emails that send you to suspicious websites.
- Be on the look out for any suspicious emails posing as Recycle Coach / My Waste and sent from a domain other than Recycle Coach.
- Don't click links within emails you don't recognize.
The City is actively investigating how this breach happened and we are working with the operators of Recycle Coach and My Waste to ensure it does not happen again.
Residents can be assured that the City of Hamilton is committed to protecting your privacy and can confirm that there has been no breach of personal information held by the City.
