Resurfacing of eastbound lanes on Main Street W begins tomorrow
Hamilton, ON – In a continuing effort to repair the city’s roadways after damage caused by another tough winter, crews will commence emergency resurfacing work on the eastbound lanes of Main Street W beginning on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 pm.
The eastbound lanes of Main Street W between Cootes Drive and the Highway 403 ramps near Newton Avenue will receive a “shave and pave” treatment, where the top two inches of the existing pavement is milled away and new asphalt is put back on top.
Crews will begin their work in the two curb lanes at Cootes Drive, moving eastbound toward the 403. The work on the eastbound lanes is expected to be complete by Friday, March 16, pending weather conditions.
Motorists and HSR customers on routes 1A King, 5 Delaware, 51 University, and 10 Beeline may experience delays in the area.
“Thank you to residents and motorists for your patience as staff work to repair asphalt badly damaged by this winter's extreme weather fluctuations. We are continuing to take immediate and longer term steps to alleviate and repair this serious issue.” - Mayor Fred Eisenberger
Quick facts
- City of Hamilton roads crews are continuing to respond with “all hands on deck” in an effort to repair damage to the road in several priority areas across the city.
- In 2018, the City has seen a 250 per cent increase in the number of locations requiring pothole repairs across Hamilton
- Over the course of this winter, certain segments throughout the road network have experienced accelerated decline and may need earlier interventions ahead of the City’s asset management review cycle. The accelerated decline of roads due to weather fluctuations is exacerbated in road segments that are at or near the end of their lifecycle. While staff had hoped to avoid making significant investments in the LRT corridor over the short term, the condition of Main Street West and other high volume road sections in the City require more immediate attention.
- Public Works is conducting an assessment and will be putting together a list of priority areas and options for Council’s consideration. Prioritization will be based on the following criteria: current road condition, road classification (arterial, collector, residential), traffic volumes, bus routes, truck routes, future planned work, risk management, master plan/development projects, and input from roads and maintenance program.
Residents and motorists are asked to report potholes by contacting the City’s Customer Service Contact Centre during regular business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm) at 905-546-CITY (2489). When reporting potholes, please provide detailed information such as location (street addresses or intersections) and estimated size of the pothole.
