Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
HAMILTON, ON – On December 6, 1989, at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, 14 young women were murdered simply because they were women. This senseless and brutal act led to Parliament designating December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Today we remember Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
Together, let us create a culture of mutual respect and bring an end to gender-based violence by questioning, calling out, and speaking up against violence and discrimination towards women, girls and people of diverse gender identities.
All flags at City of Hamilton facilities have been lowered to half-mast to honour those who have experienced gender-based violence.
