Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger on the Passing of Ron Joyce

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of entrepreneur extraordinaire and community advocate, Ron Joyce.

Affectionately known as `The Doughnut King`, Ron made his initial impact on the City of Hamilton in 1956 when he served our community as a member of the Hamilton Police Service. In 1964, Ron invested in the first Tim Hortons shop on Ottawa Street North, and shortly after, Ron grew the business into one of the most successful food service chains in the world.

The Joyce family name has become celebrated throughout our community through Ron`s philanthropic initiatives for healthcare, education and community betterment. His contributions through his Joyce Family Foundation include the creation of the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, a site of Hamilton Health Sciences’ McMaster Children’s Hospital and the Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation at Mohawk College.

He leaves behind his seven children, their spouses and his grandchildren.

A condolence book will be available at City Hall until end of day Thursday, February 14, for Hamiltonians who wish to pay their respects to Ron Joyce.
