Student Innovation & Creativity Cornerstone of CityLAB’s Inaugural Project Showcase
Hamilton, ON – CityLAB opens its doors today to share the success of its inaugural projects. As Hamilton’s newest social innovation hub, CityLAB Hamilton is the pilot program between the City of Hamilton, McMaster University, Mohawk College and Redeemer University College that brings together student, academic and civic leaders to co-create a better Hamilton for all.
With 11 projects currently underway, the CityLAB Showcase presents 11 projects as shining examples of the initiative. With 172 students, 18 City staff and 15 faculty members, the students logged more than 6,000 hours in conjunction with 70 staff hours over the past six months to deliver results.
“This is a testament to the determination, innovation and heart behind all the projects. The showcase will highlight the creative ways that students are helping to make Hamilton more vibrant, healthy and sustainable city.” - Patrick Byrne, Project Manager of CityLAB
The partnership matches the three academic institutions with City of Hamilton staff to develop solutions to City-identified projects that align with the City’s Strategic Priorities.
CityLAB is moving some of the City of Hamilton’s strategic priorities forward through an emphasis on community engagement and participation by actively including students and the community in meaningful projects. This allows for mutual understanding of City processes and encourages a more open and transparent government, rooted in a spirit of collaboration and partnership.
The projects represent a significant leveraging of valuable staff time. Each hour of staff time contributed to CityLAB projects results in approximately 85 student hours directed to the development of innovative ideas, prototypes and proposed solutions.
The principles of co-operation of CityLAB include working in collaboration, community engagement, community-building and retention of local talent, specifically students.
