Temporary Capacity Restrictions at Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant
HAMILTON, ON - As the construction of the new main pumping station at the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant approaches completion, plant capacity will temporarily be reduced for approximately two months effective October 22, 2021. The capacity reduction is required in order to complete the connection of the new pumping station to the treatment plant’s headworks channels. This project is part of ongoing, multi-year capital upgrades at the Woodward Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant.
During this time, if a significant wet weather event occurs which results in the wastewater treatment plant receiving more than 1,000 megaliters per day (1 megaliter equals 1 million liters) of combined wastewater, the City will be required to initiate a plant bypass, which would result in untreated wastewater being discharged into the Red Hill Creek and Hamilton Harbour. The City has satisfied all of the regulatory requirements for this construction work and has received approval from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for both the work and for the temporary reduction in wastewater treatment plant capacity.
The new main wastewater pumping station has a total capacity of 1,700 megaliters per day. It is larger and deeper than the existing pumping station, which will help mitigate system flooding during extreme wet weather events, provides increased storage capacity for wastewater, and its design provides operators with options to help mitigate solids build-up during dry weather.
