Top 10 things to do if you have lost or found a pet
HAMILTON, ON – June is Lost & Found Awareness Month at the City of Hamilton’s Animal Services. The team wants to help your pet find its way back home if it should become lost. In order to do this, the team produced in-house, a short, two minute video to give residents some pointers. We know that losing a pet can be an unbearable hardship and an emotional rollercoaster as pet owners search their neighbourhoods and alleyways looking for them.
In this short video, residents will see the ten easy steps that they can take that will either prevent, or alleviate, the stress both on them, and their “furry” family member should they become lost.

Licensing and microchipping your pet is a sure-fire way that your pet will be returned, sometimes within 24 hours. A licensed dog gets one free ride home every year should they become lost and are picked up by Animal Services. City staff return hundreds of pets home every year because they are wearing a municipal dog licence and their microchip information is up to date. Think of it as your pets “in case of emergency” number just like we do for humans.
Revenues from licensing also go to saving other animal lives, offsetting sheltering and medical costs. $1.00 from a dog licence goes to the costs of maintaining a leash-free park.
Hamilton is a large city so this is one way to make sure your pet finds its way home. Residents are encouraged to spread the word – tell your neighbours, relatives and friends that, they too, can help save animal lives simply by licensing their pet.
Should your pet become lost, let’s make sure that next knock on the door is your pet coming home safely.
