Update #2 on flooding at 235 Rebecca Street, Hamilton
Hamilton, ON – Sunday, January 10, 2016 – Flooding at an apartment building on Rebecca Street has displaced residents at least overnight tonight.
A pipe burst early this morning and flooded the lower six floors of the 17-storey building. Emergency services responded to a call about the flooding at the building at 235 Rebecca St. at 6:23 am this morning.
The City’s Community & Emergency Services Department Operation Centre was activated this morning to support the residents. Electrical for the building is turned off and residents are being evacuated throughout the day. HSR buses have so far transported 80+ residents to the Bennetto Community Centre, which has been activated as an emergency reception centre and overnight shelter.
Emergency services, Red Cross and building management are assessing the building and resident situations and working with residents to plan for overnight/short-term housing needs and supports. Animal Services are also assisting at Bennetto with pets.
Electricians are on site and will be working with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) to restore power as soon as possible.
