Update #3 on flooding at 235 Rebecca Street, Hamilton
Hamilton, ON – Sunday, January 10, 2016 – Electricians and the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) continue to work to restore power to the building at 235 Rebecca St. Some level of power has been restored to the upper floors (7-17) and work continues to progress.
Red Cross, building management, emergency services and City staff continue to assess the building status and resident needs and are working with residents to plan for overnight/short-term housing needs and supports.
The City’s Community & Emergency Services Department Operation Centre was activated this morning to support residents. Bennetto Community Centre was activated earlier today as an emergency reception centre and overnight shelter, and will continue to operate overnight for displaced residents.
Background: Flooding at an apartment building on Rebecca Street displaced approx. 400 residents early this morning when a pipe burst and flooded the lower six floors of the 17-storey building.
