Update on flooding at 235 Rebecca Street, Hamilton
Hamilton, ON – Sunday, January 10, 2016 – Residents at an apartment building on Rebecca Street are being evacuated due to a burst pipe that flooded the lower six floors of the 17-storey building this morning.
Emergency services responded to a call about the flooding at the building at 235 Rebecca St. at 6:23 am this morning. Water was flowing through corridors and walls on floors six and below.
The City’s Community & Emergency Services Department Operation Centre has been activated to support the response. Electrical for the building is turned off and residents are being evacuated. HSR buses have so far transported 61 residents to the Bennetto Community Centre, which has been activated as an emergency shelter/reception centre. Emergency services, Red Cross and building management assess the building situation and work with residents to plan for short-term housing needs and supports. Animal Services are also assisting residents with pets.
Electricians are on site and will be working with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) to restore power as soon as possible to upper floors not impacted by the flooding.
