Update: Repairs and clean up on the Red Hill Valley Parkway
HAMILTON, ON – Early this morning, a tractor-trailer carrying liquid asphalt struck a bridge and rolled over on the Red Hill Valley Parkway, spilling approximately 44,000 litres of liquid asphalt onto the road and into the grassy median area.
At this time, the Red Hill Valley Parkway remains closed southbound between Queenston Road and Greenhill Ave, and northbound between Stone Church Road and King Street E while City of Hamilton crews clean up the asphalt and repair significant damage to the road itself.
The City anticipates that the Red Hill Valley Parkway will remain closed in both directions in this area throughout the afternoon rush hour, and until at least late this evening.
Crews are currently working to scrape off as much of the liquid asphalt as possible, and will commence an emergency “shave and pave” in the area today. This treatment will include milling off the top two inches of existing pavement and placing new asphalt back on top.
The City will also replace the broken guiderail and is working with the CP Rail to assess damage to the bridge.
The City’s traffic operations staff have implemented emergency traffic detours and have all hands on deck at the Traffic Management Centre reviewing the alternate routes and are remotely adjusting signal timing where possible.
