UPDATE: Wentworth Stairs re-opening until later this summer, intermittent closures expected
Hamilton, ON - July 11, 2017 - Earlier this month, the City of Hamilton closed the entire length of the Wentworth Stairs to accommodate construction on the west leg of the Sherman Access.
The City re-opened the stairs earlier today thanks to changes in the construction schedule and renegotiations with the contractor overseeing the job.
The bottom half of the stairs will be completely closed to all pedestrians later this summer while crews rehabilitate the footings and complete proactive work to alleviate erosion along the footpath beside the stairs. The official date for the closure has not yet been set.
In the meantime, stair users should expect intermittent closures.
There will be temporary gates set up for pedestrians to cross the roadway at the mid-point of the stairs to ensure safety around the construction zone on the west leg of the Sherman Access. Pedestrians and cyclists using the stairs should not enter the construction zone on the roadway.
The west leg of the Sherman Access remains closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
