Waterfront Trail near Bayfront Park open, repairs still pending
HAMILTON, ON – Last spring, the Waterfront Trail was closed to the public between Bayfront Park and Princess Point due to damage caused by flooding, high water levels and extreme wind. The trail re-opened to the public in late August, though several sections remained fenced off for future repair.
The trail is currently open, but still requires significant repairs to the asphalt and sections of the shoreline. Trail users will see a number of signs marking stretches with a narrowed pathway or potential hazards. All users are asked to respect the warning signs and keep away from the areas currently blocked by the 550 metres of fencing.
In order to move ahead with long-term repairs to the trail, staff will be reviewing a report prepared by a shoreline restoration engineer and will make recommendations to Hamilton City Council regarding budget and timelines later this summer.
If and when the repairs are approved to move ahead, the work will have a very specific seasonal timeline to avoid fish spawning season, and will require approval from the Hamilton Conservation Authority and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The City of Hamilton thanks residents for their patience and cooperation as we work to make these infrastructure repairs.
