Cannon St reconstruction project: scheduling and project update

HAMILTON, ON – Last month, the City of Hamilton began a large reconstruction project on Cannon St between James St N and Sherman Ave N.

Upon beginning their work in the two lanes on the north side of Cannon St, crews milled away 80mm of asphalt and discovered the road base did not require the same level of repairs that were originally anticipated.

As a result, the City will be using the budget originally set aside for repairs to the road base for a higher quality asphalt. This will help extend the life of Cannon St.

Those traveling on Cannon St between James St N and Sherman Ave N over the next two weeks may notice a brief lull in construction activity. This is to accommodate for quality control and delivery of the higher quality asphalt.

While it may appear that work is not progressing on Cannon St, the project should ultimately be completed faster (weather permitting) and with a higher quality asphalt. A new completion date will be announced after work required in the lanes once the south side is assessed.

To avoid interruptions to major arterial cross streets during the daytime, paving on the north side of Cannon St will occur over a four-night period in July. Paving on the south side will occur later this summer. More details on the traffic, noise and dust impacts will be shared closer to the start of the work. Residents in the neighbourhood will be notified.

• Cannon St reconstruction involves road resurfacing and Cycle Track improvements, including concrete barrier curbs at selected locations and enhanced pavement markings.
• The Cannon St Cycle Track is currently closed and will remain closed throughout construction.
