City celebrates contributions of seniors as Senior of the Year Awards marks 25th anniversary

HAMILTON, ON – The City of Hamilton recognizes seniors for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the community as the Senior of the Year Awards marks its 25th year. The Senior of the Year Awards program celebrates seniors age 65 and older who contribute their time and talents in service to enrich the social, cultural or civic life of others and/or the community.

The tradition of honouring the voluntary achievements and contributions of seniors in the city first began in 1995. Over the last quarter century, the Awards have become a unique opportunity to support, engage and recognize local seniors. The City of Hamilton and community partners offer many programs and services to address the health and social needs of older adults and seniors, in support of Hamilton’s vision to be the best place to raise a child and age successfully.

• The Senior of the Year Awards includes 9 award categories: Senior of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Innovation, Behind the Scenes, Diversity and Cultural, Leadership, Compassion and Companionship, Economic Leadership, and Healthy and Active Living.
• Over the last 25 years, the Senior of the Year Awards have recognized over 250 nominees, with more than 3,000 attendees total celebrating at past awards galas.
• Approximately 17.3 per cent of Hamiltonians (92,910 residents) are 65 years of age or older (Source: 2016 census data).
• Hamilton’s award-winning Age Friendly Plan aligns with the City’s 10-year Strategic Plan, with two priorities especially – Healthy & Safe Communities and Community Engagement & Participation.
