Home Heavily Damaged in Evening Fire
HAMILTON, ON - September 7, 2017 - The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the north two storey unit of a six town/row houses at 55 Wellington North, Hamilton at 7:49 pm this evening.
Upon arrival, crews reported a well involved fire with flames venting through the front second floor window of 55 Wellington North and heavy smoke conditions. Firefighters immediately entered 55 Wellington to perform search and rescue operations where they located three occupants in the home who were escorted outside and placed in the care of Hamilton Paramedic Service.
Due to the premises being an older town/row house structure there was a potential for fire to spread to the adjoining unit therefore a multiple alarm was dispatched to the location to bring additional units to assist in firefighting operations.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after an aggressive interior attack at 55 Wellington Street North with no fire spread to the adjoining units. Due to the heavy fire and water damage to 55 and the hydro being shut down to 53 Wellington St North, they are presently uninhabitable and the tenants are being assisted by the Red Cross.
Damages are estimated at $150,000 and the probable cause of the fire is suspected to be careless disposal of smoker’s material. The three occupants removed by firefighters from 55 Wellington were assessed by Hamilton Paramedic Services but did not go to hospital and there were no injuries to firefighters.
