New Deputy Fire Chief serving Hamilton
HAMILTON, ON – Hamilton Fire Chief David Cunliffe is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Milovanovic as Deputy Fire Chief of the Hamilton Fire Department (HFD), effective August 12, 2019.
Reporting to the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief Milovanovic is responsible for overseeing the Operations Division. The Assistant Deputy Chief of Operations, Career and Volunteer, and the Assistant Deputy Chief of Professional Standards, Training and Communications report to the Deputy Fire Chief of Operations. Deputy Fire Chief Milovanovic works alongside Deputy Fire Chief John Verbeek, who is responsible for Operational Support and Community Safety.
Throughout his 37 years of service with the HFD, Deputy Fire Chief Milovanovic has risen through the ranks, serving in many positions including Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, District Chief, Acting Platoon Chief, and most recently Assistant Deputy Chief. Committed to lifelong learning, he has completed numerous courses and programs at the Ontario Fire College, Mohawk College, McMaster University and Queens University, as well as Harvard’s Manage Mentor program.
Deputy Fire Chief Milovanovic’s appointment follows the completion of the recruitment process to fill the vacancy due to the recent retirement of Deputy Fire Chief Randy Moss, which took effect August 1, 2019.

- On August 16, 2019, Council approved an amendment to the City of Hamilton By-law No. 19-035 Schedule B to reflect the appointment of a new Deputy Fire Chief.
- The HFD is an all-hazards operation that serves a city of over half a million people through three levels of service: full-time/career emergency response services in urban areas, volunteer emergency response services in rural areas and a composite emergency response service with a mix of career and volunteer for suburban areas of the city.
- The HFD is dedicated to preserving life, property and the environment in Hamilton through an integrated program of fire protection and rescue services and emergency management.
