George Hamilton Day 2019 Celebrations

HAMILTON, ON – The public is invited to celebrate George Hamilton Day and Famous Hamiltonian 2019, Janet Lee, by engaging in free family-friendly events on July 30 and August 3 and 4 at the Erland Lee Museum, 552 Ridge Road, Stoney Creek, and on August 5 with a presentation at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, 123 King St. W. Hamilton, followed by a walking tour.

The City is partnering with the Erland Lee Museum, the Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario, the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Footsteps in Time and the Art Gallery of Hamilton to present community events in celebration of Janet, George and the city he founded.

“The designation will always be unique to the city. It will always be known as George Hamilton Day.”  Patricia Saunders, 2019 recipient of the City of Hamilton Rev. T. Melville Bailey Award for Lifetime Achievement in Heritage, after an astonishing 70 years of volunteering.

• In honour of our city’s founder, Hamilton celebrates the August Civic Holiday Monday as `George Hamilton Day’.
• Each year on George Hamilton Day weekend we celebrate the contribution of a notable historical figure as voted by the citizens of Hamilton.
• This year, Hamilton residents voted Janet Lee as Famous Hamiltonian for 2019, for her role in establishing the first Women’s Institute in the world in 1897.
• Today, Women’s Institutes exist in more than 70 countries.
