Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger “Green steel” a great leap forward for Hamilton
HAMILTON, ON - ArcelorMittal Dofasco, the Ontario government and the Government of Canada are to be congratulated for a game-changing $1.8 billion investment that will reduce green house gas emissions that contribute to climate change and improve the quality of life for everyone who lives in Hamilton.
This is a transformative investment that will mean a great leap forward allowing for a massive reduction in carbon emissions which is so important given that we are in a climate emergency. It will also mean a massive reduction in air pollution that has affected our bayfront and beach strip communities for over a hundred years.
ArcelorMittal Dofasco will be able to eliminate coal from its steel-making process, transitioning to electric arc furnaces and allowing it to market its product as “green steel” which is so attractive to manufacturers looking to reduce their own carbon footprint from their supply chain. It will mean upwards of 2,500 construction jobs and secure the jobs of ArcelorMittal Dofasco workers far into the future. Hamilton’s reputation as the advanced manufacturing centre of Canada is further enhanced by this announcement.
Thank you, John Brett, ArcelorMittal North America CEO and Ron Bedard, ArcelorMittal Dofasco CEO, for your leadership in making this project a reality. Thank you, Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for your leadership in investing in this project and, in turn, investing in Hamilton and its people.
