Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger on meeting with Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ community members
HAMILTON, ON – Today, I met with members of Hamilton’s Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ communities as one of the first steps in building a stronger relationship with these diverse and vibrant communities within our city.
I am sorry for the pain and fear that the Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ communities, their friends, and allies experienced at the Pride event and which many are still feeling.
I would like to thank the participants of the meeting and my two special advisors for Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ community initiatives, Cole Gately and Deirdre Pike.
Cole and Deirdre have volunteered their time to provide advice and assist me moving forward to help strengthen the relationship between the Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ communities and the city.
They do not replace the city’s LGBTQ Advisory Committee. The LGBTQ Advisory Committee is an volunteer advisory committee that reports to the whole of council through the Audit, Finance and Administration Committee.
The meeting today was positive and constructive. I listened, I learned, and I look forward to continued dialogue.
