Statement by Mayor Fred Eisenberger regarding cannabis regulation
HAMILTON, ON - I am no longer required to declare a conflict of interest to cannabis related issues due to a material change in circumstance with respect to the federally regulated medical marijuana company my family is an investor in. I will only need to declare an interest whenever the specific company comes before Council.
I have received an opinion from the City’s Integrity Commissioner advising me I am able to now comment publicly on the regulation of cannabis in general. As the company we have invested in has transitioned from a privately held to publicly held corporation, our new status as minor shareholders in a public company, as outlined in Section 2 of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act means that the investment no longer triggers the requirement to recuse myself from debate.
Going forward, I am therefore participating in discussions and commenting on the regulation of cannabis.
